Fleck, John L., Jr., a lifelong resident of Hull, passed away after a short illness on April 20, 2012 at the age of 70.
Johnny grew up surrounded by a large extended family and working with relatives at Daley and Wanzer, the family owned moving company. As do many people that grew up in Hull, John had a love of the water and was able to spend most of his life where he loved most. As a teenager and young adult, John was a competitive sailor and traveled the United States sailing and winning regattas. Johnny's love of the ocean led him to enlist and serve proudly as a member of the U.S. Navy. After his military service, Johnny returned home and began what turned into a forty year career of commercial fishing. He spent his years fishing for lobster in the waters from Hull Bay to George's Bank and back again, as well as swordfishing the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Never wanting to retire from what he loved to do, John recently launched a second fishing boat. With the help of numerous friends and family, John spent five years custom building a boat that he planned to fish in the waters of Hull. Captain Johnny was at the helm of two vessels: the Jake and Josephine (named for his parents) and the Wendy Marie (named for his late sister). Being a fisherman was not what he did, but rather who he was.
John was the son of the late Jake and Josephine Fleck. He was the caring and devoted father of Jay “JJ" Fleck and his wife Michelle of Hull and the loving grandfather of Owen. He was the former husband of Jean M. Fleck of Hull. He was the brother of Gary Fleck and his wife Patsy of Hull, Victor Fleck and his wife Jean of Stamford, CT, Anne McKenna and her husband Paul of Arlington, and the late Wendy Fleck. Johnny also leaves behind a fleet of cousins and friends whose outpouring of love, compassion has been remarkable.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 9 AM prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Hull at 10 AM.
