Obituary

Robert W. Ashton, 65, of New Bedford died Tuesday March 27, 2012 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Charles and Evelyn (Gosselin) Ashton, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.


Mr. Ashton was formerly employed as a truck driver until his retirement.

During the Vietnam War, he served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Survivors include his companion May Menard; four daughters, Wendy, Debbie, Karen, and Robin; and nine grandchildren.

He was the father of the late Bobby L. Ashton and brother of the late Charles Ashton.

A Committal Service with military honors from the U.S. Marine Corps will be held on Monday April 30, 2012 at 1 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Calling hours are omitted. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
