Joyce M. (Fitman) Acker, 73 of Worcester, died Sunday, April 15th after a brief illness with her family by her side. Her husband of 50 years, Warren R, Acker died last August. She is survived by her son, Timothy J. Acker and his wife, Carolina V. of Cary, NC; two daughters, Lisabeth M. Merchant and her husband, Raymond W. of Uxbridge and Christine M. Acker of Worcester; her sister, Irene C. DeSalvio of Kittery, ME; five grandchildren, Shannon Morrissette of Worcester, Caitlin Merchant of Uxbridge, Madelyn, Katie and Nicolas Acker of Cary, NC; two great grandchildren Brooke and Paige Morrissette of Worcester and many nephews and nieces. She also leaves her close friends Bill and Carol Moore. Two brothers Donald and Harold Fitman and two sisters, Sister Mary Catherine Laboure (Sisters of Providence) and Barbara DesChenes predeceased her.
She was born in Worcester the daughter of Harold J. and Irene C. (Hinds) Fitman; and was a graduate of the former Commerce High School. Mrs. Acker had worked in the office of the former Palson’s Office Supply, Thom McAn Shoe and Allmerica Financial before retiring. She was an avid reader, enjoyed Keno, dining out, watching the New England Patriots and college basketball, her favorite team being Duke. She also enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Stowe, Vermont and Ogunquit, ME; enjoying the beach and shopping. Mrs. Acker was devoted to her family and especially enjoyed her time spent with them.
Her funeral is Friday, April 20th, with a service at 11:00 a.m. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, April 19th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
