Obituary

HANNA, Ruby Lee, age 82 of Teaneck, NJ passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2012.
She was the daughter of Larry and Cloey Hanna, and was born in Scranton, South Carolina on February 12, 1930. Ruby leaves to cherish her memory, two children, Frances and John Jr., a granddaughter Maya Lee Hanna; and a former daughter-in-law, Melba Lee, three sisters, Frances Caviness, Ida Kirkland and Jeanette Cameron, two brother-in-laws, Woodie Kirkland and Melvin Caviness, three sisters-in-law, Mary Hanna, Dorothy Hanna and Sadie Hanna and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ruby is predeceased by her husband John Henry Hanna Sr., and 10 siblings, James, David, Jessie, Lee, Kenneth, Robert Charles, Louise, Chessie, Lula J., and Dorothy.
Ruby lived an active life and as her good friend Elizabeth Klinger said was a “fighter”. It might be said that Ruby tried to be a “drum major for justice” as she and her friends fought to eliminate segregation in the Englewood School System. She was also involved in fighting for tenant rights and many other political issues in Englewood and Teaneck. Ruby loved God, family, her fellow human beings and her dog, Tina. Most important is that she wanted to see all children do well. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was an employee of Englewood Hospital for 29 years.
A special thanks is extended to all of the caretakers (Diane Kwartenga, Bernice Owuser, Luz Garcia, Patricia Jicha and Diane Allotta, her biblical Naomi) who were involved in watching over Ruby during the final stages of her life. In addition a special thanks is extended to the management and staff at George Washington Memorial Park where our Dad had worked and whose continued kindness and generosity will be forever appreciated.
Friends and family are invited for visitation on Friday from 10-11 AM at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 Fourth Street, Englewood, NJ. A funeral service will begin at 11 AM. Interment to follow in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ.
