Obituary

John W. Garvey, 22, of Medway, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning, April 1, 2012 from injuries he received in an automobile accident. He was the beloved son of Shawn Garvey of Medfield and Jean C. (Kashalena) Garvey of Medway.

John was born in Framingham on November 4, 1989 and had been a resident of Medway since age 5. He graduated from Medway High School in 2008 and was captain of the lacrosse team and played hockey. John went on to study at Mass Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay where he recently graduated from on the Dean’s List with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering, completing his studies early in just 3.5 years.

John loved to travel, especially his backpacking trip around Europe with his friend, Sean and while at Mass Maritime, he did three sea terms including a trip to the Panama Canal. John also loved spending summers on the Cape with his family.

John had a great sense of humor and was a loving, thoughtful and considerate young man and in that spirit was an organ donor and had also given blood often.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Christine and Catie Garvey, both of Medway and his grandparents, John and Erma Garvey of Medfield and Nancy Kashalena of Medfield. He was the grandson of the late James Kashalena.

He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service in the Medway Community Church, 193 Main St. in West Medway on Friday, April 6 at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow at Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in John’s memory to the John W. Garvey Memorial Scholarship c/o Jennifer Lisk, Medway High School, 88 Summer St. Medway, MA 02053.
