Teresa Elaine Sutton Elrod, 47, of Irwin County, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, after a long battle with colon cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Tuesday, April 3, at Big Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne McCrimmon, the Rev. Rex Johnson officiating. Mike Martin will deliver a message written by Teresa and Mark Sutton will deliver thoughts from the family. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Monday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Teresa was born August 22, 1964 in Tifton to Wiley Thomas and Betty Martin Sutton. She lived in Irwin County most of her life, graduating from Irwin County High School in 1982 and lived a short time in St. Mary’s and Abbeville. She attended Ben Hill-Irwin Technical College where she studied accounting. Teresa was a former Administrative Assistant at Ben Hill Finance and a former Industrial Engineer Clerk at Shaw Industry. She was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church. Teresa enjoyed horseback riding, trips to the beach, softball, fishing, competitive running for fun and for charities and any outdoor activity.
She is survived by a son, Jace Sutton Elrod; parents, Wiley Thomas and Betty M. Sutton; brother and sister-in-law, Mark & Sonya Sutton all of Irwin County; sister and brother-in-law, Debra & Mike Martin of Hahira, GA; special friend, Edward Fussell of Irwin County; Jace’s father, Mark Elrod of Wilcox County as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Teresa’s Journey Of Hope Team, Relay For Life, c/o Vivian Hancock, 1596 Ten Mile Rd., Rebecca, GA 31783, the Relay For Life team of their choice or to the Blue-Gray Community Hospice, P.O. Box 1447, Fitzgerald, GA 31750.
