Gertrude M. (Surette) Doherty, a 65 year resident of Melrose, passed into eternal life on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose following an extended illness. She was 89 years old.
Gertrude was born in Boston on November 5, 1922 to the late William and Mary (Babine) Surette. She grew up in East Boston and attended the Boston Public School system. Gertrude was a homemaker and dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was an accomplished and magnificent artist, enjoyed traveling and square dancing with her husband and was an avid bingo player. She was a member of The Ladies Auxillary of Harold O. Young, V.F.W. Post # 2394 of Melrose.
Gertrude is the beloved wife of the late John W. Doherty. She is the devoted mother of John L. Doherty and his wife Harriet of Merritt Island, Florida, Dennis M. Doherty and his wife Judith of Merrimack, New Hampshire, Laraine M. Borrows and her husband Kevin of Merrimack, New Hampshire, Arlene Tallberg of Eliot, Maine, Richard F. Doherty and his wife Kimberly and Debra Blodgett of Manchester, New Hampshire. She is the loving Grammy to Brenna, Eric J., Kara, Benjamin, Jeffrey, Paul, Brian, Peter, Katrin, Daniel, Michele, Shannon, Jennifer, Jason, Derek, Matthew, Jamie and her 10 great-grandchildren. She is the beloved sister of Edward Surette of Burlington, Lillian Brown of Tewksbury, Frances Corkum of Lexington, William Surette of Woburn and the late Marie Barry and Walter Surette. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Gertrude's Funeral on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 11 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by her Funeral Mass in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 12 noon. Interment at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne will be private. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
