HAVERHILL: Edwin C. Eldredge, 99, died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 in the Wingate of Haverhill surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Mary I. (Curtis) who died in 1993.
Born in Harwich on July 21, 1912, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Laura (Handy) Eldredge. Edwin would have reached the milestone birthday of 100 this year. He had resided in Key West, FL and Andover before moving to Haverhill in 1954. He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy where he served for over twenty-four years before his retirement in 1954. He served in the submarine service during World War II and the Korean War. Edwin also worked as a millwright for the former Haverhill Paperboard Company for twenty-five years before retiring in 1982.
Edwin was a lifelong member of the Lorraine Post #29, V.F.W. in Haverhill, a member of the U.S. Navy Fleet Reserve and the Submarine Veterans of World War II. He had a strong work ethic and especially loved spending time with his family. An avid NASCAR fan, he also enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He had a great fondness of animals, especially cats and dogs.
He is survived by five daughters, Barbara A. Ottaviani and her companion, Terry Martin, Brenda Dewhurst and Suann Hickey and her companion, Cliff Bohanan all of Haverhill, Phylis Rollins and her husband, Philip of Cape Coral, FL, Mary Anne Sirois and her husband Dan of Newport, NH; three sons, Kenneth H. Eldredge of Ratone, NM, William E. Eldredge and his wife, Lynne of Haverhill and Robert N. Eldredge of Cove City, NC; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be privately held at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, 63 Elm St., Salisbury, MA 01952. Arrangements are under the direction of the Linnehan-Grondin Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill.
