W. Edisel Young, 83 of Irwin County, Georgia, died Friday, March 23, 2012 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 26, 2012 at Pinetta Baptist Church, Irwin County, with the Rev. David Barton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Young was born May 24, 1928, in Ben Hill County to the late Jake and Sally Jane McMillan Young. He grew up in Berrien County and farmed his first crop at age 16. He graduated second in the Class of 1945 from Alapaha High School. From 1947-1951, he played basketball for the Lions Club in Alapaha. Mr. Young moved to Irwin County in 1960 where he continued to farm, winning several awards for his peanut production. He was a member and deacon of Pinetta Baptist Church, where he was a former senior adult Sunday school class teacher. Mr. Young was also a licensed airplane pilot.
He is survived by his wife: Maudine S. Young of Irwin County; sons and daughters-in-law: Derrell & Raye Young of Ocilla and Gary & Beth Young of the Pinetta community; grandchildren and their spouses: Suzanne & Chris Estes, Jake & Elizabeth Young, Matt Young, Mark Young, and Michael Young; great-grandchildren: Aaron and Ayda Estes; brother: Wesley & Irma Young of Ocilla as well as several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Susan Y. Howell; a granddaughter: Scarlett Howell; a brother: Bobby Young; and two sisters: Grace Flanders and Betty Young.
