Herbert Earl Gray, Sr., 79, of Enigma died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. Terrell Roberts will officiate and Rev. Woodrow Gray will give a eulogy. Mr. Gray will be laid to rest at Enigma Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 and 15, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Mr. Gray’s sons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Gray was born on December 19, 1932 in Thomaston (Upson County) and was the son of J. D. Gray, Sr. and Lillian Strickland Gray, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one son, Scott Dwayne Gray; and one sister, Connie Ophelia Goddard. He was a truck driver and of the Baptist faith. He was also a United States Air Force veteran.
Mr. Gray is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy Lamar and Estela Gray of Douglas and Herbert Earl Jr. and Chastina Gray of Ambrose; two brothers, Rev. Woodrow Gray of Douglas and J. D. Gray, Jr. of Tifton; five sisters, Loretta Burkett of Douglas, Frances Giddens of Enigma, Brenda Parkerson of Enigma, Pat Wirebrough of Enigma and Susan Barnes of Brookfield; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his long-time companion, Thelma Apperson of Enigma.
