...Active in the Elks, Veteran, U.S. Postal Service; 79
TEWKSBURY - Arthur L. Griswold, age 79, a leader at both state and local levels of the B.P.O. Elks, a Korean War Veteran, and retired U.S.P.S. supervisor, died Saturday afternoon at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Scuturio) Griswold, with whom he had celebrated a 57th wedding anniversary this past November 13th.
Arthur was born in Adams, MA, a son of the late Frank and Ruby (Cardinal) Griswold. He was raised in Woburn, and lived in Winchester before moving to Tewksbury in 1964.
He enlisted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and served in Korea for fifteen months. He continued his military fraternity after an honorable discharge by joining the Tewksbury Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8164, and the Tewksbury Disabled American Veterans, Post 110.
Arthur was most proud of his fifty five years of service as a Life Member to the Tewksbury-Wilmington Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge 2070, where he served as Exalted Ruler in 1974 and 1975. He continued to be active in the Tewksbury-Wilmington Lodge as chair member of numerous committees and events, and would climb the Massachusetts B.P.O.E. membership as District Director from 1987 to 1980. He went on to hold the title of District Leader in 2002 and 2003.
Arthur worked for the Winchester Branch of the United States Postal Service for over 36 years, where he began his long career as a clerk, advanced to letter carrier, and retired as a supervisor.
Besides his beloved wife, he was father of Trudy McCarthy and her husband Timothy McCarthy III of Lynn, Gordon P. Griswold and his wife Elizabeth (Smolinsky) of San Jose, CA, Joanne P. Forsblad and her husband Jeffrey of Danville, NH, and Arthur L. Griswold Jr. and his wife Michelle ( Couture) of Dracut; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth Jeffords and Carol Walker, and brothers William Griswold and Kenneth Griswold.
Visiting hours are Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral Services were held at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery at 111 Glennallen St. Wichendon, MA.
