VYVAN P. MACKAYVyvan P. Mackay, 89, a lifelong Newton resident and former Owner/ Director of the Mackay Funeral Home in Newton, died Tuesday April 6, 2004 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.Mr. Mackay began working in the funeral business at the age of 13 with his uncle, the late Archie Bellinger, who owned the Rich & Bellinger Funeral Home in Newton. He later took over the funeral business from his uncle and moved it to it’s current location in 1960 when the Mass Turnpike was extended thru Newton. For over 60 years he served many families in Newton and the surrounding area’s until his retirement in 1988. Vy also was an avid boater, who had spent many years summering in Sakonnet RI, where his family maintains a home. Mr. Mackay graduated from Newton Trade School and from the New England Institute of Anatomy, Sanitary Sciences & Embalming in Boston in 1930. He was a life Member of Dalhousie Lodge F & A.M. of Newton, a Past Dad Advisor of the Rainbow Girls, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, and Palestine Chapter OES of Newton. He was also a life member of the Newton Lodge of Elks and had been a member of the Newton Kiwanis Club.He is survived by his wife of 65 years Dorothy E. (Quinn) Mackay, his children Ronald Mackay of Little Compton RI, Cynthia Marchand of Newton and Kristin Mackay of Newton, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Winford Mackay.A funeral service will be held on Fri April 9 at 10 AM in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre St. Newton Corner. Interment will follow at Newton Cemetery. Visiting hours will be in the funeral home on Thurs. from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital 51 Blossom St. Boston, MA 02144.
