John A. Lyons, of White Cliffs in Plymouth and formerly of Scituate, died on March 6th at Radius Healthcare at the age of 83. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Joan (Kip) Lyons, and his children Heather Wakelin of Biddeford, ME and the UAE; Dirk Lyons and his wife Caroline of Woodstock, NH; Carrie Nissi and her husband Joseph of Bradford, MA; Wendy Smith of So. Lawrence, MA; Jody Bowskill and her husband Jerry of Belfast, ME; and Kip Lyons of Clinton, CT. He was the devoted grandfather of Cully, Whitney, Andrew, Sarah, Alexa, Morgan, John and William. He also leaves his sisters Ruth "Cubby" Hickcox of Trumbull, CT and Andrea Shoemaker of McLean, VA, and nieces and nephews.
John was born in Boston and grew up in Lexington, MA. He graduated from Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH in 1948 and Yale University in 1955. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War and had worked for a number of companies as a manufacturing executive during his business career. He was a past member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club and the Red Brook Harbor Yacht Club, and was a charter member of the Satuit Boat Club. John enjoyed the ocean, boating, sail boarding, and especially spending time with his family.
At John's request, there are no services. In lieu of flowers his family requests that donations in his memory be made to the Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center, 1356 Old Clinton Road, Westbrook, CT 06498.
