Obituary

NEW BEDFORD — Stephen S. Howland, age 91 years, of Dartmouth, died Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Hathaway Manor after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Julia Cornell Howland.

Born in Dartmouth and a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late Gideon and Elvira Carr Howland.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army for four years. For many years he worked as a driver for the former Union Street Railway Company until retiring.

He was a very active volunteer for the Smith Neck Friends Meeting especially caring for the grounds, working on paper drives and the well known annual clambake. One of his prize accomplishments was growing and cultivating his daffodil garden and sharing the yellow blossoms announcing spring with his many friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his son, Stephen Howland and his wife, Sandra; his daughter, Beth Gauvin and her husband, Leonard; four grandchildren, Stephen Howland and his, fiancée, Kaylee, Peter Howland and his companion, Christina, Ryan Gauvin and Erica Gauvin; and two great-grandchildren, Bella and Julianna.

Visitation will take place on Sunday from 2-4 p.m., in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford. His graveside service will be in the South Dartmouth Cemetery on Monday at 10 A.M.
