Obituary

Dr. Harry A. Kaupp Jr. age 73 of Amherst, NH, formerly of Allentown, Pennsylvania, died March 25, 2004 at the Warde Health Center, Windham, NH.

He was born in Atlantic City, NJ. He was a resident of New Hampshire for several years, formerly of Easton, PA. He received his BS from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA in June of 1952. He received his MD from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA in 1956 He later received his MS from Northwestern University in 1960 and his Honorary Doctor of Science in 1988 from Muhlenberg College. Mr. Kaupp did his internship at Allentown General Hospital, and did his surgical residency at Northwestern University Hospital.

Dr. Kaupp was Vascular Surgeon for many years at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA, where he was chief of the vascular division. He was formerly on the Board of Directors for Muhlenberg College, Educational Ventures Inc., and the Squam Lakes Association. He was a visiting professor-Surgical Grand Rounds at Jefferson Medical College, and Dartmouth University. Dr. Kaupp had over 40 publications and honors he received throughout his career. While doing graduate work at Northwestern University he did some of the early liver transplant research, for which he got the Chicago Surgical Award with Dr. Thomas Starzl.

He was one of the youngest surgeons to be inducted into the Society of Vascular Surgery. Dr. Kaupp specialized in peripheral vascular surgery. In the mid 1960’s he started an annual vascular fellowship program in Allentown, PA. This program trained a number of vascular surgeons over the next 2 decades and its graduates included a number of surgeons who continued their practice in different parts of the country including the Lehigh Valley.

Dr. Kaupp was a Lieutenant in the US Navy attached to the 2nd Marine Division US Marine Corp.

He is survived by his Wife: Barbara A. (Kuhn) Kaupp of Amherst, NH

1 Son: Gregory S. & his Wife Lisa Kaupp of Wayne, PA

1 Daughter: Patricia A. & her Husband Robert Waller of New Boston, NH

5 Grandchildren: Benjamin & Jameson “J.J.” Kaupp of Wayne, PA and Crystal, Megan, and Anna Waller of New Boston, NH.

Funeral services were held in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Easton, PA and burial took place at the North Hampton Memorial Shrine Cemetery in Easton, PA.

Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main Street, Salem, NH was in charge of the arrangements.
