Robert E. Thurber, 94

Dateline: Norton, MA

Robert E. Thurber, 94, of Norton, passed away on Saturday February 11, 2012 at the home of his daughter in Phoenix, Arizona. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy M. (Ward) Thurber who died on June 12, 2003. Mr. and Mrs. Thurber were wed on June 19, 1943.
Born in Attleboro, MA on September 12, 1917, he was a dear son of the late Elbert H. and Mildred W. (French) Thurber.
Bob grew up in Attleboro, was educated in Attleboro public schools and was a 1935 graduate of Attleboro High School. He had made his home in Norton for the past 65 years.
A retired substation foreman, Mr. Thurber had worked for the former Massachusetts Electric Co. in Attleboro for 45 years prior to retiring. He also assisted his late wife with the operation of the former Dilly Dot Shoppe, a business they operated for many years on Pine St. in Norton.
A 50 year member of St. James Masonic Lodge in Mansfield, Bob was a former longtime volunteer member of the Norton Fire Department and coached Norton Little League for 25 years. He enjoyed spending time on Cape Cod.
He is survived by his devoted children; Nancy A. Dean of Phoenix, Arizona, Robert F. Thurber and his wife Sharon of North Smithfield, Rhode Island, and James A. Thurber and his wife Kathy of Catonsville, Maryland. Also surviving are his cherished 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday February 18th from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.
A funeral service will be held at the conclusion of visiting hours at 12:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Oak Knoll Cemetery, Rehoboth.
In lieu of flowers, Bob’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Norton Fire Department Gift Account, 70 East Main St. Norton, MA 02766
