Elizabeth (Stickney) McCagg, Stonington died Sunday, March 28th in her 96th year at Essex.
Beloved widow of W. Ogden McCagg, she is survived by her daughter Katharine H. Robinson of Stonington; nine grandchildren, Bruce S. Anderson of Stonington, Elizabeth Anderson Morningstar of Ann Arbor, Mich., Alexandra McCagg Jones of New York City, Dorothy McCagg Querfurth of Providence, RI, Ashbel S. Green of Portland, Ore., Timothy T. Robinson of Newport, RI, Elizabeth H. Robinson of Portland Ore., Anne Robinson Clinchy of Enterprise, Ore., and Alison Green Moles of London, England; and eleven great-grandchildren with another on the way.
Three of her children predeceased her: William O. McCagg, Jr., Edith K. Anderson, and Anna W. Green.
Born in New York City, she graduated from the Chapin School and was accepted at Bryn Mawr College, but did not attend, a decision she later regretted. She moved with her family to Providence, RI after WWII where she was active in the Episcopal Church, and served several terms as a delegate from Rhode Island to the Episcopal National Convention. She first came to Stonington in 1912 when she was four years old. She spend every summer there, until moving to Stonignton permanently in 1965.
A woman of strong convictions, she was nevertheless open to and genuinely interested in what others had to say, and was always concerned for the less fortunate. She was ahead of her generation when she marched on Washington in the 1960s against the Vietnam War.
She was an accomplished gardener, a delightful hostess, a wonderful listener, and known as one of the greates grandmothers of all time. She was a beautiful person, who will be sorely missed by her adoring family and her many friends and admirers.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Calvary Church, Stonington.
