Obituary


Foley, James John, remembered as a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his four siblings: Eleanor Glimp of Cambridge, Patricia Carroll of Ware, Charles J. Foley, Jr. of Falmouth, and Kathleen Feldstein of Belmont; his children James Foley of St. Louis, Mo., Carolyn Foley of Belmont, and Kevin Foley of Concord. He is predeceased by his son, John Foley, and he is survived by his five grandchildren, Emily, Katie, John, Blaise, and Vivian. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Paul’s Church, 29 Mt. Auburn St. Cambridge, Ma Tuesday, February 7th, at 10 am with a reception to follow. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Born in 1924, the son of Charles and Eleanor Foley, Mr. Foley grew up in the south end of Boston. He is a graduate of Boston Latin School and of Harvard College, class of 1946. He was a member of the Naval ROTC, Pi Eta Club and the track team, specializing in distance events.

He was commissioned as an ensign in the US Navy. After the war he returned to Harvard and earned a Masters degree in engineering. In 1951 he married Joan Locatelli of Belmont. From 1952 through 1959 he taught Production at the Harvard Business School as a junior professor. He then worked at the Boston Herald as an assistant to the publisher. From 1962 to 1967 he was a vice president managing regional sales for the Courier Citizen Corporation.

He returned to the Harvard Business School in 1967 and served in various capacities including Dean of Admissions, counseling applicants, students, and graduates regarding career choices. Foley retired from Harvard in 1989, and continued to work as a consultant for the college and the business school for several years.

He proudly served as class chairman for his class of 1946 60th Harvard reunion.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Harvard University, Foley/Glimp Financial Aid Fund.
