TEWKSBURY - Herbert van Hogezand, age 87, died Sunday, January 29 peacefully in his home surrounded by family after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Fre (Steen) van Hogezand. They were married for 50 years before her passing in 2006. He was the beloved father of the late LCpl Herbert-Jan van Hogezand, USMC. He was born in Makassar, Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), Indonesia, the son of the late Willem J. and Mary Francis E. (Welborn) van Hogezand. He was raised in The Netherlands and Dutch East Indies. At the age of sixteen he was active in the Nederlandse Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (NBS), the Dutch Underground, during World War II. At twenty-one, he joined the Dutch Regiment Stoottroepen, 'task troops,' to fight in Indonesia and served three years in the Intelligence Service from which he was honorably discharged. Through the sponsorship of the First Baptist Church of Milton, he immigrated to the United States in 1962 and had lived in Tewksbury since 1979.
He retired from Lechmere Inc. where he worked as an accountant in the Cambridge and Woburn offices. He volunteered at the Tewksbury Senior Center; ballroom dancing for special fundraising events as well as preparing tax returns. Herbert loved socializing and dancing with friends at the Lynnfield Senior Center, the Torigian Community Life Center in Peabody, and with the 'Come Alive After Five' group in Methuen.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Maarten J. and Janice A. van Hogezand of Lynn, a daughter Maureen E. Kotb-van Hogezand of Orleans, three grandchildren; Maarten H.J. van Hogezand of Lynn, Amir Kotb and Amanda Kotb, both of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, two sisters; Yvonne Swens of Limburg, The Netherlands and Sylvia van Hogezand of Daly City, California.
At his request, funeral arrangements are private. Donations made in Herbert's memory to the VNA of Middlesex-East & Visiting Nurse Hospice, 607 North Ave., Suite 17, Wakefield, MA 01880, are appreciated.
