Obituary

AUGUSTA, GA. – Mr. Charles Clarence Royal, Jr., ¬¬¬86, entered into rest on January 21, 2012, at his residence with all of his children present.

Funeral services will be conducted at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 12:30 pm with Reverend John Pinson and Reverend Sue Meehan officiating. Interment will be private.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Church on Tuesday from 11:30 am until the time of services.

A native of Augusta, Charles attended Monte Sano Elementary School, and the Academy of Richmond County, where he was the cadet lieutenant colonel in the ROTC program. After graduating from ARC, he attended Augusta College. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and trained to be a naval aviator. He received an honorable discharge. Charles then completed his degree at the University of Georgia, graduating in 1947 with a BBA from the Terry School of Business. He belonged to SAE fraternity and The Gridiron Secret Society. He was a long time supporter of UGA.

Charles was employed by the Georgia Department of Revenue for 30 years. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for over 46 years, serving as chairman of the Administrative Board, among other roles.

He is survived by his loving children, his son, the Honorable Charles Ashley Royal, Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia and his wife Ellen, and his daughters, Toni Ann Royal and Carla Ann Royal. He is also survived by several beloved grandchildren, Charles Ashley Royal, Jr., Carson Alexander Royal and his wife Kate, Lauren Royal DeGeorge and her husband Steven, John Austin Royal and his wife Anna Caroline, and Caroline Anne Royal, and great-grandsons Holden Taylor Royal and Steven Obed DeGeorge.

Charles expressed special
gratitude to Carol Taylor for her kind friendship for many years.
Special thanks also to Herbert Ellis for his faithful visits at the end of Mr. Royal’s life.
