George N. Ackerman, Jr.
Retired Service Manager for
Distributor Corporation of New England

TEWKSBURY: George N. Ackerman, Jr., age 89, a resident of Tewksbury for 58 years, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell.
He was the beloved husband of Irene I. (O'Hara) Ackerman, with whom he celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on November 17, 2011.
Born in Cambridge on April 27, 1922, he was the son of the late George N. and Susan M. (Mooney) Ackerman.
Mr. Ackerman was raised in Belmont, attended Belmont schools and graduated from Boston Trade School.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Ackerman served during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Hale. He was awarded several decorations for his military service including the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with two Stars and one Silver Star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as the Service Manager for the Distributor Corporation of New England in Cambridge, where he worked for 20 years and taught Air Conditioning and Heating courses to future technicians. Mr. Ackerman previously served as Vice President of Boston Filter Company until 1970.
He was a member of the Mount Lebanon Lodge AF & AM of Boston.
Mr. Ackerman enjoyed photography, woodworking, extensive travel with his wife to Europe, annual vacations to St. Marten and a deep appreciation for nature.
The family extends deep appreciation and thanks to the Staff of Blaire House of Tewksbury Assisted Living for the care, concern and respect shown to their husband and father.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two daughters, Martha A. Sermier and her husband Robert F. Sermier of New York, NY and Susan A. Mandhyan and her husband Indur B. Mandhyan of Princeton, NJ; two granddaughters, Viveka A. and Mallika A. Mandhyan both of Princeton, NJ; two brothers, Lionel Ackerman of Laconia, NH and Ronald Ackerman of Marblehead; also many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ackerman was the brother of the late Helen, Robert and Frederick Ackerman.
Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 20, from 5-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by a Chapel service and interment at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Rd., Tewksbury.
