John J. O’Meara, a resident of Stoughton since 1953, formally of Somerville and Quincy, passed away peacefully at home on Friday January 13, 2012 at the age of 84. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Roberta N. “Bobbie” (MacWilliams) O’Meara, his daughter Nancie Rae Andrews of Bradenton, Florida, his son Daniel K. O’Meara of Stoughton, granddaughter Laura J. O’Connell and great granddaughter Aubrey Elizabeth O’Connell both of Parish, Florida and his brother Paul O’Meara of Burlington, MA. He was also a brother to the late Henry O’Meara and Mary (O’Meara) Hacker.
Born November 4, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts, John was the beloved son of the late Henry D. O’Meara and Margaret M. (McPhearson) O’Meara. He attended Boston Public Schools and was a 1945 graduate of Somerville High School. John was a Plasterer by trade, attended Architecture courses at MIT and attended Babson College where he was able to attain his title of a Nursing Home Administrator. Prior to his retirement he was employed by the Stonehedge Nursing Home in West Roxbury, MA for over 10 years.
Mr. O’Meara served four years in the United States Navy during World War II, Asiatic/Pacific Theatre. He was the proud recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre Medal. He was an active member of the Stoughton community. He served on the Stoughton Finance Committee, Stoughton Redevelopment Committee for 23 years, various Stoughton School Building Committees, The Fourth of July Committee for 32 years, serving as the Grand Marshall in 1982. John was a Town Meeting Member, member of the Stoughton Grenadiers, American Legion Post 89, VFW Post 1645, AMVETS Post 1977 and served as Vice President of the Stoughton Friends for Seniors.
Visiting hours will be held in the Sheehan Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton on Tuesday January 17, 2012 from 4 - 8 P.M. Immediately followed by a funeral service with Military Honors. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Cremation to follow and his burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of one’s choice in John’s memory will be appreciated.
John will always be remembered by all as a kind, gentle and hardworking person.
