Alfred S. “Stan” Johnson, Jr., 83, of Norton, formerly of Rumford, R.I., passed away on Saturday January 7, 2012 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare in Norton. He was the beloved husband of Rita M. (Desmarais) Johnson to whom he was wed on September 2, 1950.
Born in Rumford, Rhode Island on July19, 1928, he was a son of the late Alfred S., Sr. and Marion (Smith) Johnson.
Stan grew up in Rumford, was educated in East Providence schools, and was a 1946 graduate of East Providence High School.
Upon graduation from high school, he served in the United States Air Force during WWII. Following three years of faithful service to his country, he was discharged on July 29, 1949 with the rank of T/Sgt.
A retired carpenter, Mr. Johnson had been employed by the E and D Construction Co. in Rumford for 50 years prior to retiring. He had also worked for the City of East Providence as an Auxiliary Police Officer for 25 years.
For the past 13 years, Stan had made his home in Norton. Since living in Norton, he was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and was a member of the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222.
While residing in Rumford, he was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church of which he was a 3rd degree member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
Stan loved spending time with his family and in his spare time enjoyed playing golf . He was a longtime member of the Middlebrook Country Club in Rehoboth.
In addition to his beloved wife of over 61 years, he is survived by his devoted children; Charlene C. Fletcher and her husband Jeffrey of Portsmouth, RI, Alfred S. Johnson, III and his wife Cheryl of Johnston, RI and Judy A. Burgess and her husband William of Norton. He was the dear brother of Gordon Johnson and his wife Beverly of Cortland, NY, Allen Johnson and his wife Betty of Coventry, RI, Stephen Johnson and his wife Joan of Smithfield, RI and Audrey Eaton of Cumberland, RI, and is also survived by his cherished 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday January 11th at 9:00 A.M. from the Norton Memorial Funeral Nome 19 Clapp St, (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton followed by a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 1 Power St., Norton. Burial with military honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday January 10th from 4-7 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
