Augusta, GA---Mr. Preston H. Johnson, 82, beloved husband of 63 years to Mildred Harden “Midge” Johnson, entered into rest on Monday, January 2, 2012 at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm tomorrow Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the First Christian Church, 629 Greene Street, with Dr. Don Manning officiating. Interment will follow at West View Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was a native of Augusta and was a member of the First Christian Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy. Mr. Johnson was the owner and operator of Johnson Grocery from 1948 until approximately 1972 and following was the owner of the Johnson Curb Market for 35 years. He was a Past-President of Toastmasters International, Georgia Carolina Club and was President of the Augusta-Richmond County Committee for Good Government from 1986 to 2002.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Nettie Ammons Johnson and by four brothers and four sisters.
Survivors, other than his wife include his brothers, Fred Johnson, Billy Johnson and wife Juanita, sister, Birdie Youngblood, all of Augusta and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends this evening Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Platt’s Crawford Avenue.
