Marjorie McDermott, R.N.

...former Director of Nursing at Tewksbury Hospital; 83

TEWKSBURY - Marjorie McDermott, R.N., 83, the former Director of Nursing at TewksburyHospital, who remained active in numerous volunteer capacities since her retirment, died Fridaynight, Feb. 15, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell.

She was born in Lowell, on January 27, 1919, a daughter of the late James S. and Anne V.(Hancock) McDermott. She was raised in Lowell and attended Sacred Heart School and LowellHigh School. She earned her Nursing and Nursing Administration degrees from Rivier Collegein Nashua, NH.

Her career at Tewksbury Hospital spanned 28 years, and included positions as Supervisor,Director of Nursing and Director of the Tewksbury Hospital School of Nursing. After retirement, she continued her nursing career at the Oblate Fathers Infirmary in Tewksbury.

In her later years she was active at Saints Memorial Medical Center as a volunteer in theCardiology Dept., the Employee Health Dept., and the Foundation Office.She was also active in the Greater Lowell League of Catholic Women, where she served aspresident, was a member of the Eta Omega Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau InternationalSociety, a global nursing organization, was a member of the J.F.K. Library Foundation, was amember of Girls Inc of Lowell, was a member of the Directors of the Pollard Library in Lowell,was recording secretary of Lowell Garden Club, was a member of the Lowell Parks andConservation Trust, was a voting member of Community Teamwork Inc., and a member of theRivier College Alumni Association. She had been recognized throughout her career bynumerous organizations and named as Women of the Year by several local organizations.

She is survived by a sister, Eleanor M. Gillick of Fla., a brother and sister-in-law, James andNatalie McDermott of Fla., two nephews, John and his wife Nancy Gillick Jr. of Chelmsford.,Edward and his wife Melanie Gillick of Londonderry, NH, two nieces, Patricia and her husbandHenry Slide of Fla, and Marjorie Ann McDermott of Tewksbury.

Her Funeral Mass was held Tuesday Feb. 19, in the Sacred Heart Church followed by Interment in St.Mary’s Cemetery, No. Tewksbury.
