Obituary

Wayland: Mary V. (Nicholas ) Alphen, of Wayland died peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Residence at Wayside Hospice in Wayland.
She was born in Boston on September 9, 1918 after her late parents Luciano and Michaela (Nicolazzo) Nicholas emigrated to the United States from Calabria, Italy.
Mary was the loving mother of Mary “M.J.” Jones of Wayland, Paul F. Alphen, Jr. and his wife Nan of Westford and Patricia M. Monahan and her husband Douglas of Framingham. She cherished her grandchildren Paul C., Christopher J. and the late Jack Alphen, and Sean D. and Kathleen P. Monahan. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all who were very dear to her. She was the wife of the late Paul F. Alphen, Sr. and sister of Victor Nicholas, Pat Nicholas and Jennie Walsh.
Mary attended Brighton High School and the Boston Secretarial School. She held the position of Secretary to the Superintendent at Boston City Hospital until her 1950 marriage to her beloved Paul F. Alphen, Sr. who predeceased her in 1973. Mary lived a remarkably healthy life for 93 years. Until her retirement in 1998, she was the owner of the Mary V. Alphen Insurance Agency of Wayland.
She was a devoted communicant of St Zepherins Church of the Parish of the Good Shepherd in Cochituate. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was a passionate fan of the Boston College Eagles and the Boston Red Sox. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and her extended family.
Visitations will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Rd (Off Rte 30), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Parish of the Good Shepherd at St. Zepherins Church, 99 Main St (Rte 27), Cochituate Village, Wayland.
Interment will follow in the Alphen family lot in Evergreen Cemetery in Brighton.
