Adrien J. Messier, 84, of New Bedford died Monday March 15, 2004 at Mariner Healthcare Center after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret F. (Hampton) Messier.
Born in Fall River , the son of the late Alphonse and Elmire (Vadeboncoeur) Messier, he had lived in the North End of New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Mr. Messier was formerly employed by the New Bedford Fire Department for 31 years until his retirement as Captain of Station 7 on July 31, 1980.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army until receiving his honorable discharge in November 1945. At the time of his separation from the military, he was a staff sergeant with Battery C of the 549th Field Artillery Battalion.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra F. Gauthier of Lakeville; two sons, Thomas A. Messier of Billerica, and Robert E. Messier of Lakeville; three brothers, Charles Messier of Fairhaven, Leo Messier of Florida, and Robert Messier of Alaska; a sister, Annette Hanks of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren, Neil Gauthier of New Bedford, Kyle Gauthier of Lakeville, and Adam Messier of Billerica; and several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Edmond Messier.

Visiting hours will be on Wednesday March 17, 2004 from 2-5 PM. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
