Edward R. "Ned" Mackey,
of Tewksbury, Retired Engineer
TEWKSBURY: Edward R. "Ned" Mackey, age 82, a lifelong Tewksbury resident, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011 at his sister's home in Tewksbury.
He was the beloved husband of Virginia (Garland) Mackey, who passed away in 1993.
Born in Tewksbury on December 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Jeremiah F. and Alice G. (Colbert) Mackey.
Ned attended Tewksbury schools. In 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 66th tank battalion during World War II.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an Engineer by the Honeywell Corporation and A.G.F.A. Company in Wilmington.
Ned enjoyed tinkering and developing products that would make every day life easier including his patented "Winemate" pressurized wine bottle opener.
Ned is survived by two daughters, Janet E. Leahy of Cape Cod and Lauren E. Mackey and her finace, Daniel Beaulieu of Salem, NH; one granddaughter, Emma Kate Leahy of Cape Cod ;one brother, James F. Mackey and his wife Carol of Tewksbury; four sisters, Ellen M. "Peg" Keefe, Mary A. "Allie" Casazza, Theresa G. "Tess" Berube and Rita C. O'Brien Dee all of Tewksbury; his sister-in-law, Marguerite Searles Mackey of Kansas; also many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Ned was the father of the late Russell Edward Mackey, brother of the late Joseph and Richard "Dick" Mackey and brother-in-law of the late Joseph Keefe, Frank Casazza, Thomas Berube, Donald Dee and Rita Silk Mackey.
Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 8, from 4-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 9, at 9 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital, 295 Varnum Ave., Lowell, MA 01854.
