Obituary

Ruth Hope (Mc Amblay) Almquist, age 97, passed away on December 3, 2011 at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton.

Ruth was born in Pittsburg, PA to Joseph Gibson Mc Amblay and Louise Woodside Mc Amblay. She has three brothers and two sisters all who have predeceased her.

She graduated from Germantown High School in Philadelphia, PA and attended Beaver College (now Arcadia University) in Glenside, PA, before her marriage to her late husband, George F. Almquist, in 1937.

Ruth’s home for 48 years was on Warren Ave in Mystic. She was often seen swimming out at Noank beach with friends and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, caring mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother and good neighbor. She was an avid reader, a gifted quilt maker, master gardener of azaleas and lover of animals.

Ruth is survived by two sons Robert H. Almquist and his wife Donna of Long Valley, NJ; Carl G. Almquist and his wife Christine of Mystic, CT; five grandchildren and two step grandchildren Andrew Almquist, Robert Almquist, Jeanne (Almquist) Gill, Christopher J. Almquist, Mary H. Almquist, Thomas Venditti Jr. and Julie (Venditte) Hightower; and five great-grandchildren, Zackary and Tyler Gill, Jalen Carter, Jediah Hightower Jr. and Aaron Venditti.

Ruth’s family extends their deep appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Fairview Nursing Home for the loving care they have provided her during the past four years.

A private memorial service and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Groton Animal Foundation, PO Box 7023, Groton, CT 06340.
