Florence Mae Ovaska, age 92, of Weymouth, Hingham and Cape Cod passed away peacefully at home on Sunday November 20, 2011. Mae was the wife of the late Ernie Ovaska and is survived by her son, Arthur and his wife Sherry of Ithaca, NY and her daughter Carol Mae Ovaska of Cape Cod and her grandchildren, Wynter Ovaska of Ithaca, NY, Teresa Roza of CT, Christopher Roza of Cape Cod, Sarah Ovaska of NC, Joshua Ovaska of CO, Eric and Alan Ovaska of Germany and Mike Ovaska of England. She was predeceased by her son, David Ovaska, her sister, Jeannette Hawes and her brother Bradford Hawes.
Mae was a graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers College and was a beloved First Grade Teacher at both the Jefferson School in East Weymouth and the South Elementary School in Hingham for over 25 years.
As a devoted mother with a heart of gold and sunny disposition, Mae began a tradition when her sons were in Boy Scouts that has continued for over 50 years. Each year the members of Hingham Troop 4 Boy Scouts enjoyed a weekend of Camping on Mae’s former cranberry farm in Harwich, MA.
Mae was a member of Kings Daughters, a volunteer at the Hingham Council on Aging and an active member of the Massachusetts Retired Teacher’s Association.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. S. Weymouth on Saturday November 26 from 1 to 2 P.M. immediately followed by a Funeral Service at the Funeral Home at 2 P.M. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mae’s memory to the Second Parish in Hingham, 685 Main St. Hingham, MA 02043.
