Obituary

Robert F. JANGO of Dedham was born in Boston on November 10, 1928 to Cecelia (Connors) Jango and William Jango and lived until November 16, 2011. Dearest husband of Grace M. (Domingues) Jango and devoted father of Judy, Regina, Robert, and Richard; he is also survived by nine loving grandchildren: Carla, Ariana, Jennifer, Christopher, Steven, Cassandra, Deanna, Erica, and Marissa.

He attended Brighton High School serving as Class President, and joined the ROTC—later serving in Korea with the Marines. After the war he attended Boston University and worked at Sears to support his family. He later received his education degree at Boston State College and then a Master’s degree in Special Education. Robert taught for the Boston Public Schools including South Boston High School where he was voted Teacher of the Year for the City of Boston during the school busing era. He finished out his career serving on the national ten-member executive committee for the American Federation of Teachers (National Teachers’ Union).

Robert was a writer/photographer for the retired teachers union newspaper. He won many awards for his humorous and poignant stories, including the last recorded interview with Christa McCauliffe.

Robert was a Boston Braves fan and enjoyed playing the piano and harmonica. His impersonations were legendary in his own mind. Everywhere he went he ran into someone he knew (or didn’t know) and made them laugh.
