Mary (Theodosopoulos) Spiro, 88, of Manchester died of ALS in her home on November 15, 2011.
She was born into a large and close-knit family in Manchester on August 23, 1923 to Vasilios and Anna (Kokolis) Theodosopoulos. She graduated from Central High School in 1941 and was a lifelong resident of Manchester.
She married Nicholas Spiro in 1946. Along with his brother, George, they founded the Goldenrod Restaurant.
She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Anagennesis Ladies Society, the Daughters of Penelope, and volunteered at the Salvation Army Kids’ Café. Until her recent illness, she enjoyed daily visits to the YMCA.
Mary loved to travel. With her spirit of adventure, she was always ready to go anywhere with her husband, children or siblings.
She was an open, welcoming and generous person. She will be remembered as a beacon of love who will be missed by all who have been greatly touched by her caring spirit.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband in 1983, and her siblings, Harry Theodosopoulos and Kiko Statires.
The family includes four children, Diane LaRoche, Nancy Tatsis and her husband, Vasilis, and Jayne O’Connor and her husband, Daniel, all of Manchester, and Peter Spiro and his wife, April, of Bainbridge Island, WA; her grandchildren, Alyssa LaRoche and Brian Mobbs, Jennifer LaRoche, Alexander Tatsis and Emmanuelle Gounot, Nicholas Tatsis, Katie O’Connor and Adam Sinoway, Nick, Mimi and Peter O’Connor, Emma Spiro and Chris DuBois, and Chelsea and Ethan Spiro; her siblings, Aphrodite Zitrides, Desperna “Honey” Stergiou, Virginia Theo-Steelman and her husband, David Steelman, Lambros Theodosopoulos, and James Theodosopoulos and his wife, Pam, all of Manchester, and Nicholas Theodosopoulos and his wife, Themi, of Cambridge, OH; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Saturday, November 19, 2011 at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St., Manchester. Rev. Andrew Mahalares officiated. Committal prayers followed at Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Road, Manchester.
