Wilbur F. Young IV of Groton Long Point died at home on November 6, 2011. He was an accomplished sailor and revered for his fine craftsmanship in wooden boat restoration and maintenance. Thoughtful and detail-oriented in taking care of his family home and beloved sailboats, Wilbur loved the sea and with a steady hand on the helm, he navigated the East Coast with his family and friends.”Bur” was adored for his witty sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh even by a slight, softly-spoken remark. A beautiful, gracious skier and a master chess player, Wilbur’s gentle manner and loving presence will be dearly missed by his family and friends who wish for him fair winds and following seas.
He is survived by his mother, Barbara Hastings Young of Groton Long Point; and his siblings, Patricia Brooks Kuhn, Constance Fenelon Young, Jamie Fenelon Young, Tyler Fenelon Young; and his former wife, Betsy Smith. He was predeceased by his father, Wilbur Fenelon Young and a sister, Phyllis Fenelon Young.
At his request, his family will gather for a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Development Fund, c/o Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, 365 Montauk Avenue, New London CT 06320 to support the planned construction of the hospital’s new cancer center to open in the fall of 2013.
