Obituary

MATTAPOISETT -- L. Bryce Andersen, 75, of Mattapoisett died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at home after a long illness.

He was the widower of Joan (Westwood) Andersen.

Born in Madison, S.D., he was the son of the late Andrew C. and Alyce (Farrington) Andersen.

Mr. Andersen graduated from the University of Minnesota and received a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois.

He co-wrote two chemical engineering textbooks.

He was dean of engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology for several years until he became dean of engineering at Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth, in 1980.

He also was dean of faculty and was interim provost at UMass until he retired in 1994.

Mr. Andersen had a passion for architecture, and became a volunteer tour guide for Boston by Foot when he retired.

He was an active member of the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford and served on several committees; he also was chairman of the board.

Survivors include a sister, Beverly A. Rice of Rochester, Minn.; a son, Christopher F. Andersen of Fairhaven; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" Andersen-Gilreath of Mattapoisett; his father-in-law, the Rev. Horace F. Westwood of North Dartmouth; his son-in-law, Dwaine; his daughter-in-law, Sharon; granddaughters Calyn and Sydney; grandsons Christopher-George and Collin; a nephew, Steve Rice of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and two nieces, Ann Gastineau of Rochester, Minn., and Kay Francis of Sodus, Mich.

He will be cremated.

His memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Church of New Bedford on Sunday April 4, 2004 at 1:30 pm.
