Rev. Dr. James L. Adkins, Sr.
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Saturday, October 29, 2011, Rev. Dr. James L. Adkins, Sr., 91, husband of 61 years to Bess Shaw Adkins.
Rev. Dr. Adkins was the youngest of 13 children of George W. and Clarissa B. Adkins of Shongaloo, LA. He was a graduate of Baylor University and Southern Baptist Seminary. Dr. Adkins pastored churches in Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia (serving at Woodlawn Baptist Church). Following the active pastorate, he and Bess served the Southern Baptist Convention as Home Missionaries in West Virginia and as Foreign Missionaries in Jakarta, Indonesia. Dr. Adkins served as Chaplain for the Augusta Police Department and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department for 41 years. He was known for his quick wit, love of life, and witness about his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Family members in addition to his wife include his sons: James L. “Jim” Adkins, Jr. (Linda) of Evans, Thomas F. “Tom” Adkins (Jan) of Evans, George S. Adkins (Joan) of Martinez; grandchildren: Amy Adkins Anglin (Corey), Andy Adkins, Kate Adkins, Taylor Adkins, Christy Adkins Thomas (Josh), Ben Adkins; and great grandchildren: Ansley Anglin and J.J. Anglin.
A Celebration of His Life and Christian Service will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Warren Baptist Church. A private family interment will be held prior to the Celebration Service.
