Obituary

Dalton Avon “D. A.” Law, 87, of Chula died Monday, October 17, 2011, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Chula. Rev. Chad Hall and Rev. Dan Eidson will officiate with burial to follow in Tift Memorial Gardens. Paul Justin Law, Jeremy Law, Kirk Law, Nathan Law, Hank Brady, John Brady, Charles Law and Justin Tanner will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 18, 2011,m from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mr. Law will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Law was born on March 10, 1924 in Eastman and was the son of Hiram William Law and Minnie Rosalee Pearman, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ned Elton Law, William Marvin Law and Paul Everett Law.

As a youth, Dalton was very active in the 4-H Club and Boy Scouts. In 1941, he became a Master Georgia 4-H’er, when he won the state competition in the health project division. He continued to be very supportive of both 4-H and Boy Scouts as an adult.

He completed one year at the University of Georgia, where he studied agriculture and played on the University Freshman Basketball Team.

Dalton owned and operated a diversified row crop/livestock farm in the Chula community. He was a Georgia Certified Seed Producer for many years, was very active in the Georgia Spotted Poland China Swine Association and received the Tift County Soil and Water Conservationist of the Year Award in 1964.

Dalton’s agricultural interest and focus during the last fifty years of his life were on pecan promotion and research. He operated Law Pecan Nursery and Tree Service and managed many acres of commercial pecan orchards. He was known everywhere as “The Pecan Man”.

Dalton’s true love was his family and friends. He enjoyed long, lively conversations about agriculture, politics and life, in general. He was a member and deacon of Chula Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Tift County Farm Bureau and Georgia Farm Bureau.

Mr. Law is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hazel Ward Law of Chula; three sons and daughters-in-law, Laron Sidney and Dianne Law of Sandersville, Dwayne Eston and Marilyn Law of Chula and Kenneth Allen and Cynthia Law of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan Anita and Roger Warnock of Pooler and Jeannie Law Brady of Chula; one brother, Abner Loyd Law of Gainesville, Florida; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
