Obituary

William J. Burton, age 90, of Kingston, formerly of South Boston, died on Monday, October 10, 2011, at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Lester H. & Rose (McCabe) Burton.

William was in the US Army during World War II, as a Staff Sergeant, radio operator and fought all through Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was stationed at Schofield barracks in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He was part of the 42nd Rainbow Division.

After the war, he moved back to Boston and was employed with the Boston Gas Company, as a meter reader, for 38 years.

William was an avid fisherman and loved to dance to Big Band Music. He was a football coach for the South Boston Mustangs Semi-Pro with a five year undefeated record, that still holds true today.

He retired to Kingston, the Town & Country Estates, where he has lived for 27 years, with his wife.

He was a wonderful writer, story teller, and a writer for the South Shore Seniors Newspaper, with two columns; A Bird's Eye View and commentaries on current events. He was also very active in the Kingston Council on Aging.

William was the beloved husband of Deloyce "D" L. (Mattison) for 68 years; devoted father of Donna J. Fitzgerald & her late husband Paul of Hanover, Eileen M. Burwell & her husband Paul of North Weymouth and the late Patricia Rose Cameron; father-in-law of Robert Cameron of North Weymouth; loving grandfather of Renee, Christine, Paul, Laura, Robert, Corrin, Patricia, Tracy and great-grandfather of 18 (with two more on the way); dear brother of John (Jack) Burton of Newton, Edward (Tip) Burton of West Roxbury, Rosemary (Sis) Scott of FL, Dolores Burton of West Roxbury and the late Lester Burton.

Calling hours at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main Street (Route 106), Kingston, on Thursday, October 13, from 4:00-8:00 PM.

Funeral services at the funeral home on Friday, October 14 at 10:00 AM, followed by his funeral Mass at Saint Joseph's Church, 272 Main Street (Route 106), Kingston at 11:00 AM.

Interment to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
