Obituary

Rockland – John Thomas Arthur, 80 of Rockland passed away Monday October 10 with his family by his side.

Born January 1, 1931 in Abington, the son of Matthew G. and Beatrice (Donovan) Arthur, he was raised in Hanover with his eleven siblings. He married Grace (Umbrianna) in 1955 and they raised five children together.

He was a veteran of the US Army having served in Germany during the Korean War, and was a long time member of the American Legion of Hanover.

John worked many years as an electrician and machinist at the Fore River Ship Yard.

John loved fishing, hunting, puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren, whom he always considered as his own children. He was a “Dad” to everyone.

He is survived by his children, Michael Arthur of TX, John M. Arthur of FL, Linda Taylor and her husband Philip of Rockland, and Lisa Arthur of Rockland, his sister Joan Button of Duxbury, as well as 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many extended family & friends. He was predeceased in death by his parents, his wife, seven sisters, three brothers, his daughter-in-law Christine, son-in-law Jackie, his two grandchildren Denise and Joshua, and his beloved daughter Laura Hill.

His services will be held Friday October 14 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in Holy Family Church, Rockland. Burial will be at a later date. Visiting hours will be held Thursday October 13 from 6 – 9 PM.
