Obituary

Isabelle D. (Dobbs) Mackler, 84, of Dartmouth died Sunday February 29, 2004 at home. She was the wife of Dr. Edward D. Mackler.

Born in Dayton, Tenn., the daughter of the late Claude B. and Leota (Jones) Dobbs, she had lived in New Bedford for 44 years before relocating to Dartmouth in 1992.

Mrs. Mackler was educated in Chattanooga, Tenn., where she earned her R.N. in Nursing from the Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing. Following her graduation, she served as Student Nursing Instructor in Surgical Nursing and Supervisor of hospital nurses at Erlanger Hospital.

In 1946, she founded a Civilian Dispensary for civilians working on Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. She also worked for the Veterans Administration as a Surgical Supervisor in Florida, where she met her future husband in 1947. They were married in 1948, at which time she moved to New Bedford. She dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren, whom she loved very much.

She is survived by her husband; her children, Edward D. Mackler, Jr., and Dr. Stephen C. Mackler, both of Dartmouth, Lauren L. Mackler of Newton, and David M. Mackler of Los Angeles, California; her brother, Claude B. Dobbs of Chattanooga; and eight grandchildren.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday March 4, 2004 at 12 Noon in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 884 Kempton St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, on Wednesday March 3, 2004 from 1-3 PM and 6:30-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 101A First St., Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451, or to the charity of one's choice.
