TEWKSBURY - Doris V. (Singer) Russell, age 82, a well known resident of the community for the last 55 years, died Wednesday night, October 5, at Wingate at Reading, following a very brief battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Perry M. Russell, who died on June 9, 2011.
She was born in North Reading, September 9, 1929, one of five children of the late Charles and Alfreda (Metiever) Singer, and was raised in North Reading. She graduated from North Reading High School, and upon marriage, moved to Tewksbury in 1955.
She began her 50 year career as a sales clerk at the former Jan's Department Store, and would go on to Resnick's Hardware Store, Swan Drug Store, Osco Drug, Brooks Drug, and finally, Rite Aid Drug Store, all located at the Tewksbury Shopping Center. She loved her career, and enjoyed the hundreds of friends and acquaintances she made during her 5 decades on the job.
She was an active member of St. Dorothy's Parish community.
She loved long walks around Tewksbury, and her favorite pastime was tending to her flowers.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Geraldine (Blouin) Russell of Raymond, NH; a daughter, Deborah Ann Russell of Quincy, MA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith and John Foran of Laconia and FL, Barbara and Ralph Bevins of Alton, NH; two special nieces, Karen Strickland of Georgia, and Kimberly Wochholz of Florida.
She was also sister of the late Charles Singer and Janet Brooks.
Relatives and friends will be received Sunday afternoon, October 9, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Her Funeral will begin Monday, Oct 10, at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass to be Celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Dorothy's Church, corner of Main St. and Harnden Rd, in Wilmington. Following cremation, interment will be private. Kindly omit flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Tewksbury Food Pantry, 999 Whipple Road, Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.
