Obituary

George Athaide, 88, of New Bedford died Sunday October 2, 2011 at Royal of Fairhaven after a long illness. He was the husband of Alice (Brandao) Athaide.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Gil) Athaide, he lived in New Bedford for all of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mr. Athaide was a self-employed carpenter until his retirement.

He was a former member of the Stetsonnaires.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathleen Higham and her husband Kevin, and Brenda Beauregard and her husband Norman, all of New Bedford; two sisters, Bertha Allison of Dartmouth and Irene Souza of New Bedford; six grandchildren, Brian, Matthew, Andrew, and Jonathan Beauregard, and Alison and Patrick Higham; two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Lana Beauregard; and several nieces and nephews.

His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted.
