Obituary

ROCKPORT: James A. Robertson, 95, formerly of Lanesville, died early Thursday morning, September 22, 2011 in the Den-Mar Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Evelyn D. (Robinson) Robertson.
Born in Lanesville on January 26, 1916, he was the son of the late George and Sarah (Turner) Robertson. He was a 1934 graduate of the Gloucester High School, then did a post-grad year at the High School. He went to work at the former First National Store in Lanesville and Manchester. He had also worked for the for the Consolidated Lobster Company in Bay View.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he enlisted in March of 1942 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Storekeeper, Second Class in August of 1945.
Jim was employed for the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles from 1953, until his retirement in 1978 as the supervisor hearings officer for the Lynn Registry Office. He served as a member of the Gloucester Traffic Commission and was chairman of the Gloucester Trailer Commission under Phil Tartas.
He was formerly an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Massachusetts Police Association, the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion, and a fifty-one year member of The Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Gloucester.
In addition to his wife of sixty-eight years, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jane R. and Rev. Wayne E. Jacobson, his son, James W. Robertson, Retired Gloucester Police Officer; five grandchildren, James W. Robertson, Jr., Eric R. husband of Traci Jacobson, Nathan D., husband of Jen Jacobson , Benjamin J. Jacobson, and Molly E., wife of David Fagnani; seven great-grandchildren; his former daughter-in-law, Virginia, wife of David Morey; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Robertson and Marie Robinson; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his infant son, William David Robertson; granddaughter, Liisa M. Robertson; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, George D. and Harriet Robertson, and William C. Robertson.
His funeral service will be held on Monday morning in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 6 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the VNA Care Network, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923. Interment will be held in the Seaside Cemetery, Lanesville.
