Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather
METHUEN: Werner Sohn, age 79, a resident of Methuen, formerly of Tewksbury, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at his home.
He was the husband of the late Beverly P. Sohn, who passed away in 2007. They had been married for 55 years.
Born in Rochester, NY, on February 9, 1931, he was the son of Herman and Friedel (Haas) Sohn.
Mr. Sohn was raised in Rochester, NY. He attended Edison Technical High School in Rochester, majoring in detail drafting. He attended USAF VHF/UHF radio airborne communication and flight navigation systems schools for two years. He went on to become an instructor for the USAF in VHF/UHF airborne communication and flight navigation systems. In 1954 he entered the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA, and received a degree in math and physics. He earned a Master’s Degree in computer science at Northeastern University in Boston.
He resided in Rochester, NY, Bellville, IL, Syracuse, NY and East Hartford, CT until moving to Tewksbury in 1964. He moved to Methuen in 2008.
For many years, Mr. Sohn attended the Fifth Street Baptist Church of Lowell. In recent years he attended Granite United Church in Salem, NH.
After completing his education, Mr. Sohn was employed at General Electric Defense Systems in Syracuse, NY; United Technologies Research Laboratories in E. Hartford, CT; AVCO in Wilmington; New York Citicorp in Cambridge; 3M Company in Billerica; Honeywell Computer Systems in Billerica; Nixdorf Computer Company in Burlington; Textron Corporation in Wilmington; Raytheon Electronic Systems in Tewksbury; and Lockheed Sanders Company in Nashua, NH. In addition to these positions, he worked in partnership with various individuals and corporations on a variety of projects relating to his expertise.
After retirement, he and his wife worked together in her local ceramic business, Classic Ceramix. In later years they also enjoyed working together at the Dunkin Donuts on Andover Street in North Tewksbury.
Mr. Sohn was an avid reader and possessed a highly refined technical intellect. In his own words, he “developed and continued to maintain an intense interest in the multiplex transformation and modulation of vibrational frequencies including AM, FM, frequency shift keying (FSK), phase shift keying (PSK), pulse code modulation (PCM) among many others which now at the present time also includes laser holography and the metaphysics of time as it relates to the dynamics of the creation process and physical reality.” It was his fervent desire to develop and prepare a thesis involved with the metaphysics of time.
Mr. Sohn is survived by three daughters, Deborah S. Berdos and her husband Thomas of Chatham, NJ, Rebecca A. Filadoro and her husband James of Hudson, NH and Martha L. Blaisdell and her husband Wayne of Salem, NH; numerous grandchildren, Christopher R. Berdos and his wife Kimberly, Christina Berdos Ragonesi and her husband Daniel , Candice Filadoro Keraghan and her husband Dennis, Crystal L., Nicole A., Michelle P., and James H. Filadoro, III, Brittany G. Mabe and her husband Logan, Julianna J., Jocelyn F., and Laurel H. Blaisdell; two great grandchildren, McKayla A. and Brayden J. Keraghan; and a brother, Herbert Sohn and his wife Jeanette of Rochester, NY.
There are no calling hours or memorial services. Mr. Sohn will be interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield. A private graveside service with USAF representation will be observed for immediate family only.
