Obituary

Raymond F. Block, 68, of Noank, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Ray was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on Nov. 15, 1941, the son of Matthew and Beatrice Block. Ray moved to Connecticut when he was stationed at the Coast Guard at Avery Point in 1961. He worked at Pfizer as a mechanical engineer for 35 years.

After his retirement, he moved back to Noank and involved himself with helping anyone who needed a hand with any kind of project. Ray was so grateful to share his life with his dog, his family, and his loving friends. He ended most days with a bonfire at Doc's farm and a dinner at Duffy's. He found peace on the water, going for boat rides and fishing. Ray was active with the Groton Open Spaces Association and served on the Groton Shellfish Commission.

Ray is survived by his children, Janine Holt and her partner, Lynn Mischke, and Lisa Knobloch and her husband, Eric, and his granddaughter, Brooke of Noank; his son, Rich Gonyo of Waterford; his sister, Sharon Heugel and her husband, Larry, of Florida; and his former wife, Maureen Block of Noank. He also leaves behind his four-legged best friend, Molly, who Ray referred to as a "fabulous creature".

He was predeceased by brothers, David and Bobby; his sister, Betty; and his parents, Matthew and Beatrice Block.

A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Mystic Yachting Center at the Mystic Shipyard in Willow Point, 100 Essex St., Mystic. Please wear casual attire in honor of Ray.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ellicott Wildlife Foundation PO Box 75069, Colorado Springs CO 80970.
