Daniel F. Mahoney, Jr., age 88, a lifelong resident of Winchester, passed away Aug. 22, 2009 at the Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence in Somerville after a long illness. Born, raised and educated in Winchester, he was the son of the late Daniel F. and Anna L (Callahan) Mahoney. A graduate of Winchester High School with the class of 1938, he continued his education at Bentley College where he earned a degree in accounting. He was an accountant with Jordan Marsh department stores for many years. Mr. Mahoney was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in European, African and Middle Eastern theaters during World War II, where he also provided service as an accountant/bookkeeper with the 187th Quartermaster Depot Company. He received the Good Conduct and Victory medals. In Winchester, Dan was active with St. Mary’s Parish for many years, serving as a Eucharistic Minister in church as well as to the hospitalized and homebound parishioners. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #101 and a lifetime member of the VFW #3719.
He was the beloved brother of the late Marjorie Souza and Herbert Mahoney and the loving uncle of William Souza of Hull, Robert Souza of Mansfield, TX, Dan Mahoney of Ringold, GA and Beth Stanley of Chattanooga, TN. He is also survived by his grand-nephew, Nathaniel Souza, of Hull. Dan’s funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Fri., Aug. 28th at 9AM followed by A Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 10AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Thurs. 5-8 PM. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. |
