Mr. Jean R. “John” Levasseur, of Taunton and formerly of Raynham, died Tuesday, June 9
in the Caritas-Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton, following a period of failing health.
He was the husband of Ann C. (Phillips) Levasseur for 54 years. He was born 77 years ago in
New Bedford, the son of the late Pierre J. and Eglantin B. (Jarry) Levasseur. He was raised and
educated in Fall River, and was a graduate of Prevost High School. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed at the V.A. Medical Center, Brockton, working in both nursing service and
food service. When he retired from the V.A., he worked part time for Holy Rosary Church until
his health forced him to stop. He wanted to keep busy, so he began doing a little gardening, shop-
ping and cooking. Mr. Levasseur enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and serv-
ed overseas in the Azores. He met his future wife in Dighton, and they married while he was last
stationed in Utah. Upon his discharge, they returned to Taunton, and subsequently owned a home
in Raynham, where they resided for 42 years. Their six children all attended Raynham schools. In their retirement, the Levasseurs moved to an apartment in a daughter’s home in Taunton. A
devout Catholic, Jean was a member of the Taunton Chapter of the Men of the Sacred Hearts for
over 25 years, serving first as President and then as Treasurer and was in charge of supplies. The
Levasseurs were member of St. Ann’s Church in Raynham for over 40 years. Upon moving to
Taunton, they registered at the Holy Rosary Church, where Jean once worked. They were daily
communicants, and often attended Masses at the former St. Jacques Church and St. Anthony’s
Church. Occasionally, they attended Masses at St. Mary’s Church or the noon Mass at the Father
Peyton Center in Easton. He enjoyed outings with the family, and loved fishing. He also loved
going on “dates” with his wife and shared her love for God’s Creations in the birds and animals. He was an avid Dunkin’ Donuts coffee lover, and looked forward to weekly cribbage and card games with his family, as well as playing games on the computer. He loved family get-togethers and enjoyed the visits of each of his children and their families, especially the little ones. He also enjoyed spending time with his siblings.
