John “Jack” Griffin Rowland, 21, of Winchester, MA died suddenly in Laos on March 18, 2009. Jack is the son of Marty Rowland and Ellie Griffin, also of Winchester. He also leaves behind his sisters Catherine (Emerson College), 18, and Emily, 11.
Jack spent his elementary and middle school years at the Landmark School in Manchester by the Sea, MA. Jack graduated from Winchester High School in 2006 and attended UMass Boston until January of 2007 when he set out for a year’s travel through Asia. Jack was an inveterate traveler. In his 21 years, Jack had set foot in over 40 countries. His traveling began at the age of 14 when he visited Australia and New Zealand. Prior to his Asia trip, Jack had traveled throughout Europe in the summer of 2006, and had traveled to Jamaica, the Caribbean and Mexico on countless occasions.
As a high school student, most of Jack’s extracurricular activities were outside the confines of the school. Jack worked at Domino’s Pizza in Winchester; BJ’s in Woburn, the Woburn House of Pizza, and most recently had launched an entrepreneurial business selling used cars alongside his good friend Mike Elmezian.
His Funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Wed. March 25th at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Tues. from 3-8PM.
