Peabody: Bernard F. Caron age 82 , died suddenly on July 1, 2007 at his summer home in Raymond, ME. He was a former resident of Salem and was currently a resident of Brooksby Village.
Born in Peabody, he was one of 11 surviving children of Henry A. and Louise (Ouellette) Caron. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1943 where he was treasurer of the senior class and was the starting fullback on the football team that won the championship that year.
The day after his graduation from high school, Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served with distinction during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he went to work at his parents’ Caron Restaurant on Bridge St. in Salem. He married Thelma (Nyman) of Peabody in 1949 and joined the Salem Police Department in 1960, where he rose through the ranks to becoming Captain. He continued his education on a part time basis, graduating with an associate’s degree from North Shore Community College, and a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal justice from Northeastern University. He retired in 1990.
During retirement, he traveled extensively throughout the United States including two trips to Alaska and several cross country excursions. His hobbies included woodworking, golf, ballroom dancing, acting and singing. He won the 2006 Tanner City Idol Singing Competition in the 60+ category for his rendition of ‘ Young at Heart’.
Bernie’s wife Thelma predeceased him in 1992. Their daughter Jayne died shortly after birth in 1961. He is survived by a daughter Gayle Caron-Moriarity & her husband Charles Moriarity of Delmar, NY, a son Paul Caron & his wife Courtney Bryan-Caron of Cincinnati, OH, 4 grandchildren: Jayne, Molly, Reed & Tim. He is also survived by his friend and traveling companion Claire Dionne, a brother Henry Caron of Florida, 4 sisters: Gloria Purdy of Beverly, Marie Dzierzanowski & Carol Julien both of Nashua, NH, Patricia Price of Danvers. He was predeceased by 4 brothers: Roger, Lawrence, Richard & Norman Caron and a sister Peggy DiThomas.
His funeral will held on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 9 am from the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St., [Rt. 114 / 1-A] Salem followed by his funeral mass in St. James Church, Federal St., Salem at 10 am. Visiting Hours: Friday 4 to 8 pm. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Council on Aging, 5 Broad St., Salem, MA 01970 or the Peabody Council on Aging, 79 Central St., Peabody, MA 01960.
