Obituary

Susan Stembridge Butenschon, 80, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025, at Maple Court Senior Living in Tifton, GA, surrounded by friends and loved ones. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank Butenschon and a cherished mother, sister, and friend whose kindness, warmth, and love touched the lives of many.

Born on November 30, 1944, in Valdosta, GA, Susan lived a life filled with love, dedication, and grace. She was known for her unwavering devotion to her husband, Frank, as well as her deep passion for Valdosta High School and its danceline. Her commitment and enthusiasm for the school and its traditions left a lasting impact on those who shared her love for the community.

Together, she and Frank also founded the Azalea Winds Community Band, a program dedicated to fostering students’ love for music. Through their work, they helped endow scholarships for young musicians, ensuring that students had the opportunity to continue their music education and pursue their passion. Their legacy lives on through the countless students they inspired and supported.

After moving to Tifton, GA, Susan found joy in spending time with her friends at Maple Court Senior Living. One of the highlights of her week was gathering with the St. Anne’s Episcopal Church Wednesday Lunch Bunch, where she enjoyed fellowship, laughter, and good meals with cherished friends.

Susan is survived by her two sons and their spouses, five grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister and brother, as well as many dear friends and extended family members.

A funeral service will be held on March 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Tifton, GA. Visitation will take place one hour before the service. Interment will follow at St. Anne’s Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susan’s name to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church General Fund, P. O. Box 889, Tifton, GA 31793; Azalea Winds Community Band, 110 Burton Street, Valdosta, GA 31602; or Bethany Hospice, 2700 North Oak Street, Building B, Valdosta, GA 31602.

Susan’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her, and her legacy of devotion to music, education, and community will continue to inspire generations to come.
