The family of Michael "Hacka" Higgins is saddened to announce the unexpected passing of their beloved brother. Michael was a life-long South Boston resident, well-known by his red curly hair. He graduated from Boston English High School and had a passion for sports, especially baseball. He played in the South Boston Babe Ruth League where he won a batting title for Boston Car Wash. Years later, he started a team in the Twilight League for the Boston Park Department.
He also started basketball and softball teams called"The South Boston Shamrocks." In addition to sports, Michael had an affection for music. He especially loved the Beach Boys. He started his own band called the Cape Carson Beach Boys and would perform in local establishments throughout the city. He was a hard worker throughout his life and was a retired Custodian for the Boston School Department.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, William and Hilda Higgins (McKernan) of South Boston. He is survived by his sister Maureen and the late Dave Rennie of Randolph, his brother Jerry "Hacka" Higgins and his wife Peggy (Coughlin) of South Boston, his sister Nancy and brother Bobby Higgins of South Boston. Michael was preceded in death by his sister Kathy and her late husband James Dineen of Quincy, and his late brother William and his wife Bridget (Tootsie) Higgins of Dorchester. Michael is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered as a loving brother, uncle, and friend.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brigid's Church, South Boston, Saturday November 9 at 10:00 a.m.
